How to Choose a Certifying Physician in Lee County
Every doctor who can certify you in Florida has passed the same state requirement, so this is not a question of finding the good one. It is a question of finding one whose practice suits you, and asking two things most people forget on the phone.
What "qualified physician" means here
In Florida that phrase has a precise legal meaning. A qualified physician is an MD or DO with an active, unrestricted Florida license who has completed the state's required course and examination and is registered to certify patients. The state publishes the list.
That has a useful consequence. Nobody on the state's list is more qualified to certify you than anybody else on it, because the qualification is a threshold rather than a ranking. Our directory reproduces that list for Lee County in full, alphabetically, and nobody pays to appear on it.
The two fees, and why people are surprised twice
There are two separate bills and only one is fixed. The state charges a $75 application fee, identical wherever in Florida you apply and payable again each year, plus a $2.75 convenience fee if you pay online, which makes it $77.75.
The clinic's fee is its own, and it varies between practices and changes without announcement, so the number that matters is the one your clinic quotes you when you call.
Here is the part that catches people. An initial certification and a renewal are usually different amounts, and you will need both. Your card runs a year but a certification covers at most 210 days, so most patients see a doctor about twice a year. Ask for both numbers on the first call, not the first one only.
What to ask when you ring
Five questions, and the whole call takes about three minutes.
- What does an initial certification cost, and what does a renewal cost? Two numbers, not one.
- How soon can I be seen in person? Your first certification can't be done by video, so availability is the real constraint.
- Do you file the certification and the orders the same day? Since July 2026 you cannot complete a state application until that is in the registry, so the filing is on your critical path.
- Do you handle renewals by telehealth? Renewals with the same doctor often can be, which matters more in year two than year one.
- What do you want me to bring? Practices differ on records, and the answer tells you how organized they are.
If anyone guarantees you will be approved, or quotes a price "if you qualify" as though the outcome were already settled, stop there. A certification is a medical judgment made after an examination. Nobody can promise it in advance, and offering to is a statement about the practice rather than about you.
Location matters more than it looks
Your first certification has to be in person, and if you continue with the same practice your renewals will be too unless they offer telehealth. So this is not a one-off trip you can take anywhere convenient today.
Most of Lee County's certifying physicians practice in Fort Myers, which makes the in-person requirement easier here than in much of Florida. Our directory lists every one of them in the county with the city they practice in, so you can pick on the basis of the drive you'll actually be making twice a year.
Every certifying physician the state has qualified in Lee County, reproduced in full from Florida's own file and rebuilt every Friday. Alphabetical, with license numbers and phone numbers. Nobody pays to be on it and no ordering is for sale.
This page explains how to choose and question a practice. It is not medical or legal advice and it cannot tell you whether you qualify. Only a state-certified Florida doctor can decide that, and only after examining you.
