The gear that makes it easier
Everything here is grouped by the job it does, in the order a year with a card tends to run. The appointment first, then getting it home safely, keeping it good in this climate, using it, and being considerate about the smell. Every item earns its place by solving one of those well.
Affiliate links. If you buy through one we earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you, and you pay exactly the same price either way. It is what keeps this guide free and independent.
For the appointment
Florida requires your first certification to be in person, so unlike most of this page these are for the part that happens before you own any cannabis at all. A first appointment covers a great deal of ground and most of it arrives spoken, at a moment when you're concentrating on something else.
A notebook you'll actually keep, a folder that holds the paperwork together, and a pen that writes first time. Small things, and the difference between remembering what you were told and half of it.
Healthminder Wellness Journal
Paper, dated pages, and room for the answers as well as the questions. A first certification appointment covers more ground than people expect and most of it arrives verbally, so something to write on beats trying to remember on the drive home. Needs no charge and no signal, and a receptionist will not blink at it.
Cannabis Leaf Pens (4-pack)
Retractable, fine point, quick-dry ink, four to a pack so one can live in your bag for good. Plain and dependable, and the pen you have with you is the one that gets used.
Zippered Document Folder
Twelve letter-size pockets behind a zip. Florida's registry application wants documents and a first appointment usually wants records, and the failure mode is not losing them but arriving with them loose in a bag. Blank labels are in the box.
Getting it home, and keeping it shut
Florida is specific about this and the rule is easy to get backwards: marijuana must remain in the dispensary's original packaging (Fla. Stat. 381.986(14)(a)). So the job is never decanting it into something nicer. It is putting the containers the dispensary gave you somewhere a child, a guest or a curious teenager can't open.
A lock is prudence and not compliance. The statute requires the original packaging and says nothing at all about locking it up. Buy one because you want it shut, not because the law says so.
Who you're securing it against decides which of these to buy, and what to do when a storm moves you out for a week: what you're locking it against.
OZCHIN Locking Smell Proof Case
Carbon lined with three removable dividers, so dispensary containers stay exactly where you put them. The lock is built into the zip pulls.
Soft Lock Pouch with Starter Kit
Soft-sided and flat where the hard cases are boxy, which is the difference between something that slides into a bag and something you plan around. Carbon layer and a three-digit lock.
Steel Home Security Safe
A steel box you bolt down, which is what makes a safe worth having when there are children in the house. Pre-drilled mounting holes and hardware are in the box, an 8-gauge door on a 14-gauge body, two live-door bolts, and a backup key for the night the batteries die.
Fire-Rated Home Safe
The step up, and the reason is testable: UL Classified to hold its interior safe for an hour at 1700F. Four live-locking bolts against the usual two, a pry-resistant hinge bar, and it bolts down. Eighty-five pounds, so measure the closet first.
Keeping it good in this climate
This is the one category where Southwest Florida genuinely differs from most of the country. Flower wants to sit near 62% relative humidity. Outdoor air here runs far above that for much of the year and an air-conditioned room runs well below it, so the same jar dries out indoors and goes damp on a screened porch.
Two-way humidity packs hold a sealed container near that band. They work until they stop, and the only signal is that they go hard, which is the argument for the cheap gauge that reads the air inside the jar instead of the air in the room.
The longer version, covering how the wet half and the dry half of a Fort Myers year fail a jar in opposite directions, and what to do when a storm takes the air conditioning with it, is in storing cannabis through a Fort Myers year.
Integra Boost 62% Packs (8g, 6-pack)
Two-way packs that both release and absorb moisture to hold a sealed container near 62% humidity. One 8g pack covers up to 28 grams, six to a bag, each with an indicator card that turns blue when the pack is spent. In a Florida summer that job never stops.
Cannadew 62% Packs (4g, 10-pack)
The small size, ten to a pack, for jars the 8-gram packs are too big for. The maker is clear that a 62% pack holds a humidity level and does not rescue one, so check the jar with a hygrometer instead of assuming. They go hard once they are spent.
Mini Hygrometer (2-pack)
The instrument humidity packs quietly assume you own. Under two inches, so it sits inside the jar and reads the air right around your flower, which is the reading that counts.
Electric Humidor Cabinet (25L)
A thermoelectric cabinet holding a set temperature and humidity band, and unlike most cigar humidors it reaches down to the 62% band flower wants. Overkill for one jar; sensible if you are storing properly and keeping it out of the way.
Grinding
A four-piece grinder has a screened chamber underneath that the three-piece versions leave out, collecting kief you're otherwise throwing away. That is the whole case for the fourth piece and it is worth understanding before spending anything: the difference between grinders is mostly consistency and how much of the work your wrist does.
How coarse to go, and why the uneven burn everyone blames on the paper is usually the grind: how fine should you grind it?
Cinder Clear Cut 4-Piece Grinder
Four pieces, which adds a kief chamber underneath. Clear body so you can see when it is done, and a magnetic lid that stays shut in a bag.
COOL KNIGHT Electric Grinder
The lid is the switch. Press to grind, lift to stop, so you can feel your way to the texture you want. A few seconds coarse, longer for fine.
Cloudious9 Tectonic9 Grinder
Grind by hand, then let a vibrating motor feed it out through a flip spout, which is a genuinely better answer to the part everyone spills. Lit window so you can see what is left.
Locking Bag Kit (11 pieces)
Eleven pieces in one zip: a carbon-lined lockable clutch, a four-part grinder, a tray, an aluminum jar, tubes, a silicone box and a brush. It replaces the grinder-and-tray pair with the same two items plus the bag they travel in.
Being considerate about the smell
Almost everything written about cannabis odor is framed as concealment. That framing is wrong for this audience: you are a medical patient using a legal medicine, and you have nothing to hide. What you may have is a neighbor through a shared wall who did not choose this, which is a different problem and a more solvable one.
Humidity carries smell further, and a recirculating air-conditioning system moves it around a closed house instead of out of it. Both are ordinary facts of living here.
What changes when a wall, a hallway or an air handler is shared with someone else: cannabis smell in a condo or rental.
Sploofy Personal Filter
Exhale through it and what leaves the other end carries no smell. The cartridge is replaceable, so when it has done its work you swap the filter and carry on.
Zero Odor Multi-Purpose
Handles the room, where a personal filter handles the exhale. Unscented, so it clears the odor and leaves nothing behind. Available on Subscribe & Save, which suits a bottle that lives under the sink.
PuroAir 400 Air Purifier
Pre-filter, HEPA, then activated carbon. The carbon is the part that matters here: HEPA catches particles and does nothing about smell. Runs continuously and quietly enough to forget.
Ozium Air Sanitizer (2-pack)
An air sanitizer as well as an odor eliminator, which is a different job from masking. Two cans. This is what people reach for when a room needs dealing with now. Amazon offers it on Subscribe & Save for anyone who goes through a can steadily.
Jars and containers
A jar's job is to hold a small amount of air at a stable humidity. Everything else about it is secondary, which is why a small jar you fill beats a large one you half fill: the empty space is the problem.
Colored or violet glass blocks the light that degrades flower over weeks. Clear glass in a dark closet does the same job for nothing, so buy the colored one for what sits out and the clear one for what doesn't.
Treehouse Smell Proof Jars (120ml, 2-pack)
Small screw-top jars with a child-resistant cap that takes a firm press and a twist, sold in twos at 120ml each. Sized for what a 35-day smokable limit looks like in one hand. Less air above the flower means it stays fresher for longer, and the viewing window saves opening one to check.
UV Jar with Child-Resistant Lid (500ml)
Colored glass blocks the light that degrades flower, and the lid takes a push-and-turn to open. Two jars, color-coded, which is more useful than it sounds once you are keeping more than one thing.
Infinity Jars UV Glass Jar (250ml)
Miron-style violet glass, screw top, no plastic in the seal. Heavy in the hand, because the weight is wall thickness and the wall thickness is what blocks the light.
Treehouse Smell Proof Container (500ml)
A larger double-sealed jar for when you are storing a quantity. Worth having only if you fill it: a half-empty large jar holds more air than a full small one.
Rolling papers and cones
Thinner paper burns slower and tastes less of paper; thicker paper is easier to handle. That is the entire trade, and which side of it you want depends on how much you enjoy the rolling, and not on quality.
A tip is structural, not decorative. It holds the end open, so the draw doesn't collapse as things get shorter.
The three formats compared by how much work each one takes and how long it burns: papers, cones or wraps.
Bob Marley Pure Hemp King Size Papers (10 packs)
Ten packs of pure hemp king size, 110mm, thirty-three leaves to a pack, made in Spain by Miquel Y Costas and officially licensed. Hemp paper burns slower than wood pulp and carries less taste of its own, and ten packs is the quantity that stops you rationing them.
RAW Organic Hemp King Size Slim (4 packs)
Unbleached organic hemp, the everyday version. A touch thicker than the Black, and more forgiving to roll for it.
Juicy Hemp Wraps Variety Pack (6 packs of 2)
Six flavors, two wraps to a pack, twelve in the bundle. A wrap is wider and heavier than a paper and rolls a thicker finished item, so it suits a different occasion: thicker smoke, slower burn. Pure hemp with no tobacco, and each pack reseals.
Elements Connoisseur King Slim with Tips
The same rice paper with tips in the same booklet, so the two things you need are never in two places. A tip is structural: it holds the end open and stops the draw collapsing.
Trays and stash boxes
A tray catches what you drop. A tray with a magnetic lid lets you put the whole job down and walk away from it, which is a different and more useful thing altogether.
Why the second buy is usually a box, and where a box stops being enough: the box that closes.
Rolling Tray with Magnetic Lid
A tray solves spillage; a magnetic lid solves the tray. Being able to put the whole thing down mid-job and walk away is the entire difference between this and a plain tray.
Small Metal Tray with Magnetic Lid (7x5)
Small enough to live in a drawer, and the magnetic lid stays put when the drawer moves. That is the whole job of a covered tray this size.
Bamboo Stash Box with Lock
An actual stash box: bamboo, combination lock in the lid, three airtight glass jars and a removable sliding tray. A brush and a sealing tube are in there too. It sits out on a shelf without announcing itself.
Bamboo Box with Organizer Tray
The unlocked version, and cheaper for it. Adjustable dividers and a lift-out tray, so it works as a desk drawer that happens to close.
Pipes and hand pieces
Wood is warm in the hand and survives being dropped. Glass is easy to see into and easy to break. Neither is better; they fail in different ways, and the one you should buy is the one whose failure you mind less.
A straight stem is far easier to get a brush through than a curved one, which matters more over a year than any difference in how it draws on day one.
Choosing by where the piece will live, which settles the material for you: the pipe you carry and the pipe you keep.
Blue Glass Spoon Pipe with Stand
Cobalt glass with white cane worked through it in a spiral, four and a bit inches end to end. A leather stand comes with it, so it has somewhere to sit and stays off the floor. Glass is the material you can see through, which is the only one that tells you when it needs cleaning.
Brass Pocket Pipe with Swivel Lid
Solid brass, with a swivel lid over the bowl and a stem that slides back into the body. The whole thing closes into a pocketable block with nothing to snag. Brass takes a patina with handling, so age reads as character. It is the one piece here you could put in a coat and forget about.
Six-Inch Wood Pipe with Accessory Kit
Longer stem, which cools the draw simply by giving it further to travel. Arrives with the tamper, cleaner and pouch, so nothing else is needed on day one.
Pipe Screens (100 pack)
The thing people run out of. A fresh screen is the difference between a pipe that draws and one that does not, and a hundred of them costs less than a single pipe.
Lighters and ignition
A jet flame stays lit in wind that would kill an ordinary lighter, which is worth something in a county where a lot of this happens outdoors near water.
Buy one with a visible fuel window and an adjustable flame. The window tells you it is empty before you need it, and the adjustment lets you turn it down to just what the job takes.
What flame temperature does to taste, across all four ways of lighting something: why a torch ruins a bowl.
BIC Maxi Lighters, Best Buds Series (8 pack)
Eight full-size Maxi lighters, every one a different printed design, in the sleeve they ship in. Soft flame, which is what a bowl or a paper wants: a torch runs hotter than either needs and scorches what it touches. Child-resistant, and the fuel level shows through the body.
Refillable Pen Torch (3 pack)
Long and thin, which is the shape that reaches into a bowl without you having to tilt the flame back toward your fingers. Refillable with standard butane.
MK Jet Flame Lighters (5 pack)
Five refillable jet flames in a box, which lands cheaper per lighter than buying singles. The printed designs are the actual reason to choose these over plain black: a lighter you can recognize across a table is a lighter that comes home with you.
BIO Beeswax Hemp Wick (40 ft) with Case
Hemp wick lights what you are lighting with no butane in the way. The case is what makes this one: forty feet stays wound and clean, and pulls out a length at a time.
Cleaning tools
Clean a piece before it needs it, not after. Resin from this week comes off in one soak; resin that has been sitting takes several.
Brushes are the cheap answer and they reach most of what needs reaching. Length runs out before width does, so buy the longest set that fits what you own. Caps seal both openings so you can shake a piece without wearing it. An ultrasonic tank skips the argument entirely and gets inside the bends nothing else reaches.
Which of the three methods suits which job, and how often each thing actually needs doing: how often to clean, and which method.
Twelve-Piece Tube and Pipe Brush Kit
Twelve pieces covering three different problems. A 17-inch handled brush for a wide chamber, ten assorted widths for stems, and a 35-inch flexible cable for bends a rigid brush cannot enter. The cable is the part worth having, because it is the difference between cleaning a straight tube and cleaning a curved one.
Long Pipe Cleaner Brush Set (10 sizes)
Longer at every width, which is what you want when you are cleaning something with a bend in it.
Ultrasonic Cleaner (20 oz tank)
Drop the piece in, shut the lid, let it run. Ultrasonic cavitation works on the inside of a stem and the underside of a joint, which is where a brush stops and where the smell actually lives. Sold for jewelry and retainers, which is why it is a fraction of what the same machine costs with a different label on it.
Silicone Cleaning Caps
Two stretchy caps that seal both openings, so the solvent stays in the piece while you shake it. It is the job people do over a sink with their thumbs, done properly. They also seal a piece for storage.
Cleaning solutions
Brushes move resin around. A solvent dissolves it, and which one you want depends on how you like to work: shake-and-rinse is quick and needs both hands, a soak is slower and needs neither.
Buy the bigger size if you soak rather than swirl. Soaking uses more each time, and running out halfway through is how a piece ends up sitting in the sink for a week.
Formula 420 Pipe Cleaner (3-pack)
Brushes move resin around; this dissolves it. Shake with the solution in the piece, rinse, done, and the three-pack lasts long enough that you forget where you put it.
Orange Monster Cleaning Powder (1 lb)
It comes as a powder, and that is the difference that matters. Add hot water and it foams, so it works its way into percolators and narrow chambers a poured solution runs straight past. Fifteen to thirty minutes, no shaking and no scrubbing, and one jar covers a great many cleans for the space it takes up.
Soak and Wash Bundle (64 oz, 2 pack)
Two 32-ounce bottles of soak-and-wash. A soak swallows far more than a swirl does, so volume matters. Buying it by the jug is the difference between cleaning a piece when it needs it and putting the job off.
Ultrasonic Cleaning Concentrate (8 oz)
Concentrate for an ultrasonic tank. Plain water does most of the work in one of those machines and this does the part water leaves behind. It dilutes hard, so one bottle is a long run of tanks.
Making your own
A machine does two jobs an oven and a saucepan can do badly: it holds a low temperature steadily, and it keeps the smell inside itself. The second one is why most people buy one.
A sealed vessel also means the kitchen still smells like a kitchen afterward, and a set cycle means the machine handles the timing while you get on with the rest of the cooking.
Whether a machine beats a pan at all, and what separates the three types: do you need an infusion machine?
Two-in-One Decarboxylator and Infuser
Decarboxylation and infusion in one machine, so the first step is done properly before the second begins. It runs a timed cycle and keeps an eye on the temperature for you.
Magical Butter MB2e
The machine the imitations are copying. It grinds, heats and stirs on a set cycle, so the job is loading it and walking away. Dearer than the ones that follow its pattern, and it set the pattern.
STX Infuzium Infuser
The same idea for less money, and the reviews hold up. Larger batch capacity than the budget machines, and it does tinctures as well as butter and oil.
LEVO C Infusion Machine
The large-batch option. It decarboxylates and infuses in one vessel, which is the step most people get wrong when they do it in an oven.
Reading about it
The useful test for a cookbook is whether the recipes work, and these are the ones people come back to. Each covers the infusion itself, not just what to do with it afterward.
Edibles: Small Bites for the Modern Cannabis Kitchen
The cannabis cookbook that gives the infusion itself real pages before it gets to the recipes.
Edibles for Beginners: A Cannabis Cookbook
Written for someone who has never done this, which is a genuinely different book from one written for someone who has. Starts at what decarboxylation is and why it happens.
Snoop Dogg's Treats to Eat: 55 Baking Recipes
A baking book that tells you where the infused version diverges from the ordinary one, so it works either way.
Willie and Annie Nelson's Cannabis Cookbook
More memoir than manual in places. The cooking is unfussy and the writing is the reason to own it.
Cannabis (seeing through the smoke)
David Nutt advised the UK government on drug policy and writes like a man tired of hearing both sides overstate their case. Hours on what the science does and does not support, plain enough to follow while your hands are busy.
Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana
Martin Lee follows the plant from nineteenth-century pharmacy shelves through prohibition and out the other side to a dispensary counter. Long, well told, and a fine explanation of why the law reads the way it does.
Cannabis Consumer Network
A show for people who are new to this and would rather not say so out loud. Unhurried, conversational, and pitched at the questions you would put to a friend before you would put them to a budtender.
Cannabis Rx
Interviews with researchers, physicians and patients about medical cannabis and where the evidence currently stands. The closest thing here to the conversation you will have at a certification appointment.
Around the house
Purely decorative and unapologetic about it: light, color, and something on the wall that makes the room yours.
Leaf 3D Illusion Lamp with Remote
An etched acrylic panel lit from the base, so it reads as a solid glowing shape from the front and disappears to a sliver from the side. Sixteen colors off a remote, USB powered, and it stands on a nightstand, so no wall and no drill.
Leaf Character Neon Sign (USB)
LED rope on a clear acrylic backing, cut to the outline of the artwork, so it reads as a shape on the wall. Hangs on a chain and runs off USB, so you need a socket and nothing else.
Leaf Tapestry (51 x 59)
Fifty-one by fifty-nine inches of printed microfiber, wide enough to fill the bare stretch of wall a headboard leaves behind. It hangs on pins, comes down without marking the paint, and goes in the wash when it needs it.
Leaf Resin Ashtray
Cast resin in a deep leaf relief, with the veining picked out so it catches the light from the side. Wide and shallow, with four rests molded into the rim, and heavy enough to stay where you put it. It reads as an object on a side table first and an ashtray second.
Hats
Sun protection isn't a lifestyle choice in this county. Two of these are hemp; the other two are plain wide brims with no theme at all.
Wired Brim Hemp Sun Hat
Raw hemp with a wire running through the brim, so you can shape it down against low sun on one side and leave it up on the other. Wide enough to cover the back of the neck, which is where a Florida afternoon finds you, and it goes up to XXL, which most straw hats do not.
TH5 Hemp Hat
Hemp again, structured where the bucket hat is floppy. Holds its shape in a bag.
Washed Denim Wide-Brim Sun Hat
Not hemp and not themed, just a wide brim in washed cotton denim. Shade is shade.
Reversible Leaf Print Bucket Hat
Printed on one side and plain on the other, so it turns inside out into a hat you can wear anywhere. It folds flat into a bag and comes back out without a crease, which is the whole case for a soft-brim hat over a structured one.
Socks
Cotton, printed, and warm for a Florida winter that lasts about four evenings. Buy them for the pattern.
Leaf Print Cotton Crew Socks
Cotton, mid-height, printed all over. An actual everyday sock and not a novelty gift box.
Marijuana Print Socks
The print is small enough to pass at a distance. A single pair, which makes it an easy way to try the idea.
Leaf Print Crew Socks (10 pairs)
Ten pairs in one box, every pair a different print, so two weeks of drawer goes in at once. Standard crew height, cotton blend, and enough variety in the set that the novelty ones can stay for the weekend and the plainer ones do the weekdays.
Games
Card games and one board game, all of them playable by people who have never played them before. Nothing here needs learning.
Trivia and Conversation Card Game
A hundred-odd cards of trivia and conversation prompts. No board, no setup, and nothing to learn, which is the only kind of game that actually gets played.
Looney Labs Stoner Fluxx
Fluxx with a theme: the rules of the game are themselves cards, so what you are trying to do changes mid-game. Genuinely a good game before it is a themed one.
Stoner City Board Game
A proper board, pieces and a route around it. More setup than a card game, and more of an evening.
Batteries
A 510-thread battery is the powered half of a cartridge setup: the thread is a standard, so any 510 cartridge screws onto any 510 battery. Voltage is the only setting that matters much. Lower runs the coil cooler and favors flavor; higher makes more vapor and is the usual cause of a burnt taste.
A note on how these are listed. Every one of these is sold on Amazon as soldering equipment, with titles about soldering irons and pens. That is the seller working around a policy, and it isn't what the object is. We call them what they are.
How to search for one anyway, and the three specifications worth checking: buying a 510 battery when nothing is called one.
Cartridge and Pen Stand
A weighted stand that keeps a half-used cartridge upright and tidy in a drawer. Quietly useful, and the reason people come back for a second one.
Clear 510 Battery with Lit Cube
A clear body with a lit cube suspended inside it, four voltage levels and a digital readout for charge and setting. USB-C, 400 mAh, and a ten-second warm-up. It is the only one of these that looks like anything, which is the reason to own it over a black cylinder.
Wand 510 Battery (12 inch)
Twelve inches of carved wand with a lit stone set into the handle and the thread hidden under a sliding collar. It ships in its own box, which is the giveaway that it is meant to be left out where people can see it. USB charging, and the LED is the only part that behaves like electronics.
Car Key 510 Battery
Shaped and finished like a car key fob, down to the soft-touch plastic, and it hangs on the same ring as your actual keys. Three inches long, two hours of runtime and an automatic shutoff. The cartridge is held by a magnet you fit yourself before the first use, which is the step people miss. Nothing about it reads as what it is, which is the whole design.
A few things to know
Storage that holds up to a Florida summer, grinders and trays worth keeping, a shelf of good reading, and the small practical things that make the routine easier. Every link takes you straight to that exact product.
Live pricing comes straight from Amazon, so what you see at checkout is always current. If you find something here you love, buying through these links supports the site and keeps the Fort Myers guides free to read. Thank you for that.
Most of this page assumes you already have a Florida medical card. If you do not, the doctor list is the place to start, and Lee County has more certifying doctors than most of the state.
These are ordinary consumer goods. Nothing on this page contains cannabis, and nothing here is medical advice or a suggestion about how anyone should use anything.
Product availability and specifications are Amazon's and change without notice.
