How to Get Your Florida Medical Marijuana Card
Four steps, and most of the confusion sits in the first one. Fort Myers is an easier place to do this than most of Florida, because the county's certifying doctors are concentrated here.
The one thing people get wrong
You cannot get your first Florida card online. Fla. Stat. 381.986(4)(a) requires the initial certification to be a physical examination conducted in person by a qualified physician. Telehealth becomes available afterward, for renewals with the same doctor.
This matters because the heavily advertised national services are built entirely around an online appointment, and a first-time Florida patient can't use one. If a site offers to card you today without leaving the house, it is describing a process that doesn't apply here.
The upside is local. Lee County has a large share of the state's certifying doctors and most of them practice in Fort Myers, so the in-person requirement is a short drive here in a way it isn't in much of Florida.
The four steps, in order
See a qualified physician, in person
Book with a doctor the state has qualified to certify patients. Our directory is the state's own list for Lee County, reproduced in full and refreshed weekly. Ask what an initial certification costs and what a renewal costs when you call, because they are usually different amounts.
Be certified for a qualifying condition
The doctor examines you and decides whether you qualify, then enters the certification into the state registry. Nobody else can make that decision. Qualifying conditions include cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, PTSD, Crohn's, Parkinson's, MS and chronic nonmalignant pain, plus conditions of the same kind or class as, or comparable to, those named. That last clause is how a great many patients are certified, and an unlisted condition is not automatically a no.
Apply to the state registry
Since July 27, 2026 the state will not accept an application without a current or scheduled certification with open orders already in the registry, so the doctor comes first and the two cannot be run together. Once the certification is entered, you apply to the Office of Medical Marijuana Use for the card and pay the state fee. The application goes to the state; your clinic has no part in it, although many will walk you through the form.
Buy at any licensed dispensary
Your card works at every licensed dispensary in Florida, including ones nowhere near you. Bring the card and a photo ID in the same name, every visit.
What it costs and how long it lasts
The state fee
A $2.75 convenience fee applies to each online payment, so a check or money order is $75. It is the only price published anywhere on this site, because the state sets it. The card runs for one year from approval and the fee is payable again at renewal.
The doctor's fee
Certification fees vary between practices and change without notice, so a figure printed here is one someone would budget against and then find wrong. Ask when you call, and ask about the renewal separately.
Two clocks, not one
This surprises almost everyone the second time. Your card is annual, but a doctor's certification covers at most three 70-day supply limits, so most patients see a doctor roughly twice a year and pay that fee twice.
What you may buy
Non-smokable products run on a 70-day cycle under an aggregate ceiling of 24,500 mg of THC, which is a ceiling rather than an allowance. Your own limit is the daily dose your physician recorded for each route, multiplied by 70. Smokable flower runs on its own 35-day cycle capped at 2.5 ounces. The two run in parallel, which is why a buy is sometimes refused when a patient expects it to be allowed.
Before your appointment
A first appointment covers a lot of ground and most people leave having forgotten one of the things they meant to ask. A few minutes of preparation is worth more here than anything else on this page.
- Bring your medical records if you have them, or know which doctor holds them. The certifying physician has to form a view of your condition, and records make that quicker
- Bring photo ID and know your Florida address, since residency is part of the registry application
- Write your questions down, including the two about cost
- List everything else you take, prescription and otherwise. Cannabis interacts with other medicines and this is a medical appointment
- Something to write on. Most of a first appointment arrives spoken. The accessories page has the unglamorous version of this
The state's own list for Lee County, in full and alphabetical, with the clear majority practising in Fort Myers itself. Nobody pays to appear on it.

Common questions
This page explains a state process. It is not medical advice and it cannot tell you whether you qualify. Only a qualified physician can decide that, and only after examining you.
Fees, processing times and qualifying conditions are the state's and can change. The figures above carry the date each was checked.
